Why am I not losing weight? What to review before changing your treatment

Triplets Root Wellness ·

If your weight is not changing as you expected, prepare a review of your plan before changing it. A useful conversation starts with observations, symptoms and questions, without blame or a search for a quick fix.

1. Bring the history of your progress, not just today's weight

Write down when you started, the changes you have tried and how your weight has changed over time. Include changes in appetite, energy and treatment tolerance. Ask which outcomes are being assessed beyond the scale and when your plan should be reviewed. One number cannot answer all of those questions.

2. Review habits and practical barriers

NIDDK identifies food, beverages, activity, sleep and environment as influences on weight. Describe a typical week, including work schedules, family responsibilities and access to food. Choose sustainable changes with your clinician that fit your life; avoid responding to a stall with extreme restriction.

3. Discuss medicines and new symptoms

NIDDK notes that some medicines and health conditions can contribute to weight gain. Bring a complete list of prescriptions, supplements and over-the-counter products. Do not stop treatments on your own. Your evaluation will determine whether symptoms or history warrant testing; everyone does not need the same laboratory panel.

4. If you take weight medication, review your follow-up

NIDDK explains that these medicines accompany lifestyle changes and require assessment of benefits and adverse effects. Ask whether enough time has passed to evaluate your particular product and plan. Do not increase doses, shorten intervals or combine products on your own. Continuing or changing treatment depends on the medicine and your evaluation, rather than a universal rule.

5. Clarify any questions about the product

If you use semaglutide or tirzepatide, confirm the product, formulation and instructions with your prescriber and pharmacy. FDA has received reports of dosing errors and warns that compounded products are not FDA approved. If instructions are unclear, ask for clarification before using the medicine; do not guess conversions between units.

6. Do not wait for your next appointment if warning signs appear

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially pain spreading to the back, needs immediate medical attention. Repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down also needs prompt evaluation. Call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting or loss of consciousness. Do not try to manage these symptoms by changing the dose yourself. This is not a complete list of warning signs.

7. Prepare specific questions for your visit

Provide your medication list, record of changes and side effects through the practice's clinical process. Ask: What could explain my progress? What should we review first? When is my next follow-up? Tell your clinician about pregnancy, pregnancy plans or breastfeeding before making decisions about weight medication.
